A Place in Time Clock Project     November 24, 2010
This story was submitted to us by Artist Julie Matthews showing the uniquely creative way she used some of our clocks in an art project.

“A Place in Time” was created for Begich Middle School in Anchorage, Alaska as part of the Municipality of Anchorage 1% for Art program. The program requires the expenditures of up to one percent of the capital construction costs of public building for the acquisition and permanent installation of artwork. Artists bid on the projects. I was asked to submit a proposal for the artwork and in 2009 was awarded the project which was completed in 2010.

“A Place in Time” is a series of seven ceramic tile images designed to fit around seven clocks. Each is created to represent a continent, (noting the South Pacific as the “blue continent” and not a real continent) in a different time zone, except for the Begich Middle School mascot featuring the snow leopard.

I worked with Begich Middle School art students to brainstorm ideas and help with the design for the continents. The committee chose the continents of North America, South America, the South Pacific, Africa, Asia and Europe to be depicted. I selected the images for the clocks as follows:

1) Apia, Somoa, South Pacific- a hibiscus flower: time- 8:00am (daylight saving time)
2) Anchorage, Alaska, North America- a mountain and water landscape: time-11am (daylight saving time)
3) Cusco, Peru, South America- woven fabric: time -2pm  (daylight saving time)
4) Rome, Italy, Europe- a Roman column: time- 9pm (daylight saving time)
5) Bagamoyo, Tanzania, Africa- a beaded neck piece: time-10pm (no daylight saving time)
6) Beijing, China, Asia- the Chinese dragon: time-3am (no daylight saving time)
7) The School Mascot, Anchorage, Alaska: time-11am (daylight saving time)

The student population is over 50% minority and represents many different countries from these different areas. The artwork is hung in the lobby area of the school for everyone to enjoy.
